This mural painting project was designed and painted by Seran Otterson, Rumi Wall Design for Petek Trading; a Turkish handmade craftsman goods and textile store located in Saint Paul, Mn.
This beautiful store was already architecturally a gem, featuring high ceilings, tall windows, and stone elements. The main wall of the store was still looking pretty plain and it was a perfect spot to be transformed and create a more welcoming first impression experience.
The space was enhanced by the aesthetic choices of the owner Melek, who curated a collection of handcrafted goods sourced directly from artisans in Turkey.
Melek and I aimed to design a distinctive mural wall that embodies traditional Turkish arts, fostering a culturally rich atmosphere for her clients. This mural was designed to reflect Melek's personal identity, her company Petek, and their unique products.
This mural project was created not only to complement the architectural beauty of the store but also to celebrate the rich cultural heritage represented by the textiles and crafts from various parts of Turkey.
This mural painting project provided me an opportunity to express, share, and celebrate the authentic patterns of my ancestry.

The Objectives Of This Project
Creating an exciting, kid-friendly area to help kids with their patience as they wait for their siblings' screening process.
Bringing the outdoors indoors to help children feel more connected to nature during Minnesota`s long winters.
Stimulate Creativity: painting a mural that can inspire children`s imagination and creativity.
Emotional Well-Being, designing a mural to create a positive atmosphere, a sense of comfort and security for children. Utilizing calming hues and tones, painting a mural with calming and uplifting imagery to reduce impatience, stress, and anxiety.
Environmental Enrichment: Transforming the bland environment of the hallway`s beige walls into a vibrant space, making the area more friendly and inviting for children.

This has been a very special project for me. In 2016, my then 2-year-old son and I started taking ECFE classes at Minnetonka Community and Education Center. As a first-time mother who moved to the country only 2 years ago, with a personality full of free spirit, I could feel the urge to paint and to create again after being a stay-at-home mom for 2 years. Soon I joined the PTO and I volunteered to paint this mural at the family waiting area in the building of MCEC with the funding of PTO.
Together we detected the issue of the dull look of the hallway and family waiting area. Minnetonka families whose children are eligible to do the screening for kindergarten were using the family waiting area mostly with children for quite a while.
Our goal was to create a kid-friendly area that addresses the unique challenges children face while waiting, especially during the often lengthy process of a sibling's screening or appointment. A mural that can be instrumental in fostering patience and making the experience more enjoyable. By transforming the waiting area into a vibrant, engaging, and comforting space through murals and thoughtful design elements, we aimed to enhance children’s emotional well-being, stimulate their creativity, and make a potentially stressful situation more pleasant.
